Saline Solution

Saline solution

A really easy way to help ease the effect of allergies, particularly a congested nasal passage, is a saline solution. This is essentially a salt water solution that can be used to help soothe allergies affecting your upper respiratory system. Saline solutions are available in drug stores, but a combination of normal table salt and water can also do the trick.

Take just a flat teaspoon of salt and a pint of warm water (ideally distilled), and stir until it is completely dissolved. A little baking soda, if you have it, is also ideal. If you have a small bottle with a nozzle, pour the solution into this and sniff to short squirts into your nostrils while holding your head back. Make sure that you then sit forward and let the water come back out of your nostrils. This will help ease inflammation and oftentimes will help you breathe more easily through your nose and stop general symptoms for an hour or more.
