11 Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

3. Lower back pain

Pain is typically centered on the lower back, but can also radiate to the hips and legs. For the majority of patients, lower back pain is continuous and can last for weeks. At the same time, the sensation is depicted as an ache in the back rather than a burning or searing pain which radiates.

Individuals with a bulge or protrusion may not experience a lot of back pain and those with extrusion are more likely to suffer from this symptom. This is because with extrusion the gel extends out far enough to press against the nerve root, most often the sciatic nerve.
