10 Exercises for Carpal Tunnel Relief

Carpal tunnel syndrome is most commonly caused by repetitive hand activities such as typing, writing, painting or certain types of housework. The condition is caused by the median nerve in the hand squeezing and causing discomfort. Symptoms typically tend to aggravate at night, so it is recommended to shake the hand or let it hang out of the bed to abate the discomfort.

There are also a number of finger and wrist exercises that can be carried out to help ease the associated pain and prevent future injuries. Try the exercises mentioned below to treat carpal tunnel symptoms.

1. Prayer stretch

To stretch the involved nerves in carpal tunnel syndrome, do the prayer stretch. Begin the exercise by placing the palms together in front of the chest, just below the chin.

Gradually lower the hands towards the waistline while keeping the palms pressed together and the hands close to the stomach. With the hands in this position, a mild to moderate stretch should be felt under the forearms.

Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds and repeat for 2-4 times.
