If you prefer margarine because you think it’s better for you than butter, then you might want to think again. Despite being a common dairy alternative, margarine isn’t the perfect butter replacement. Most margarine products out there have lactose added to them because it means that the margarine will taste more like butter.

There are even some margarine products out there that actually contain some butter, so that it provides a ‘half and half’ taste and consistency. So, if you can’t eat real butter, regular margarine is like a bad idea.

You can purchase dedicated lactose-free margarines from the supermarkets, but there are also products like olive oil spread, which are low in fat and don’t contain any dairy at all.
