2. Pain when swallowing
Painful swallowing is a fairly common symptom of laryngitis. When throat pain is accompanied by difficulty swallowing, the cause is usually a viral infection or possibly an allergic reaction.
The pain may be felt high in the neck or lower down behind the breastbone. For many people, the associated pain is reported as a strong sensation of burning or squeezing. Since most of swallowing is an involuntary action, any pain that is felt can be instantly noticed by the person.
