Causes of Sleep Paralysis
1. REM Sleep
One of the major causes of sleep paralysis is thought to be your body trying to protect you during REM sleep.
REM sleep is the stage in which your eyes move rapidly and your body drifts into the deepest of sleep. It is at this point that you dream. It is thought by many researchers that sleep paralysis occurs to stop you from physically acting out the actions within your dreams, given that your brain becomes extremely active during the REM phase.
Without sleep paralysis, you might experience sleep walking or sleep talking in accordance with what you are dreaming about.
So while REM sleep isn’t exactly a cause per se, it is the circumstance in which sleep paralysis happens most.
