Insomnia: 10 Remedies for Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders can happen due to a number of reasons such as physical illnesses, hectic lifestyles, stress, depression, or unusual work schedules and can impact the quality of life for people. Restful sleep is critical for optimal health, mind, wellbeing and mood.

1. Melatonin

Melatonin is an important natural hormone that is produced in some quantities by the body. It is produced by the body’s pineal gland that remains inactive during the day. The gland becomes active once the sun goes down and remains active for about twelve hours during which it produces melatonin. As such melatonin levels escalate at night time, making individuals feel less alert and sleepier.

Melatonin can also be procured from certain foods such as cherries and bananas, Cherry juice contains the hormone melatonin and the amino acid tryptophan, both of which have been linked with an improved sleep wake cycle. Being a natural food with no added component included, cherry juice is a safer way to improve sleep quality than taking sleeping pills or other pharmaceutical products.

Likewise bananas are also an excellent source of melatonin as well as magnesium. While melatonin promotes better sleep, magnesium acts as a muscle relaxant and helps encourage a restful sleep.
